Bluestone Pavers: Sealing, Cat’s Paw, and Perfect Placement

Bluestone pavers, with their sophisticated grey tones and inherent natural variations, are a popular choice for creating elegant and durable outdoor spaces. A common question we hear is, “Do I need to seal my bluestone?” The answer, while not a simple yes or no, depends on your specific circumstances.

Sealing Bluestone: When and Why

While bluestone doesn’t require sealing in all cases, it’s highly recommended in certain situations to protect your investment and maintain its beauty. To determine if your bluestone needs sealing, perform the water test: simply place some water on the surface. If it beads up, it’s likely sealed and doesn’t need recoating. If the water absorbs within a few moments, it’s time to seal.

At Bluestone Tiles Warehouse, we offer a range of sealers, including invisible and enhancing options, in various sizes to suit your project. Our expert staff can help you choose the right product for your needs. Contact us at 03 9706 9767 (Mon-Fri 7:30am-5pm & Sat 9am-4pm) or leave us a message for personalized advice.

Cat’s Paw: A Unique Bluestone Characteristic

Bluestone’s formation, from volcanic heat and gases, often results in unique markings known as “cat’s paw.” These small, irregularly shaped holes are a natural feature of the stone and are often sought after by architects and designers for their distinctive character. Cat’s paw is even visible in paving across Melbourne’s CBD. Some love the textured surface it creates, while others prefer the cleaner, more minimalist look of bluestone without it. Rest assured, the presence or absence of cat’s paw doesn’t affect the bluestone’s durability; it’s purely an aesthetic choice. We cater to both preferences, offering bluestone with and without this unique marking.

Perfect Areas for Bluestone Pavers:

Bluestone pavers are incredibly versatile and can transform a variety of outdoor spaces. Here are some perfect applications:

  • Patios and Entertainment Areas: Create a sophisticated and inviting outdoor living space perfect for entertaining or relaxing. Bluestone’s cool surface is a welcome relief on hot days, unlike some other paving materials.
  • Walkways and Pathways: Design elegant and durable pathways through your garden or around your property. Bluestone’s natural texture provides excellent grip, even when wet.
  • Pool Surrounds: Enhance the beauty and safety of your pool area with bluestone coping and paving. Its resistance to chlorine and salt makes it ideal for this environment.
  • Driveways (with thicker pavers): Create a grand entrance to your home with a bluestone driveway. Ensure you select pavers of appropriate thickness for vehicular traffic.
  • Stepping Stones: Add a touch of whimsy to your garden with bluestone stepping stones. They create a natural and visually appealing pathway.
  • Courtyards and Alfresco Areas: Define and enhance your outdoor dining or relaxation areas with the timeless elegance of bluestone.
  • Wall Cladding: Use bluestone tiles to add texture and visual interest to exterior walls.
  • Feature Walls: Create a stunning focal point in your garden or outdoor living space with a bluestone feature wall.

Once sealed to work out if your bluestone pavers and tiles require recoating with sealer, simply put some water on top. If it forms into water beads, then it doesn’t need sealing. If after a few moments the pavers have absorbed the water, then they need sealing.

At Bluestone Tiles Warehouse, we have natural stone tile sealers. Also, we stock an invisible tile sealer and an enhancing tile sealer (if you want to enhance the colour of the paving). They come in a variety of sizes to suit the area you require.
